Implementation Tips

The authors recommend that other districts interested in summer programming consider such steps as:

  • Collecting outcomes data for summer programming and using it to create and share messages that focus on key academic objectives
  • Exposing district and school staff to the culture of summer programming
  • Forming a planning team including all relevant departments
  • Designating one staff member to manage the planning process
  • Incorporating summer responsibilities into job descriptions for new hires.

Additionally, The Summer Learning Toolkit provides evidence-based, hands-on tools and guidance for delivering effective programs.
