Offer programs that last at least five weeks and include at least three hours of academics daily.
Provide a mix of engaging academic and enrichment activities.
Make sure instruction is strong. Two ways to do this? Hire effective teachers. Give them a curriculum that is aligned to the school year, reflects state standards, and meets the needs of all participating students.
Protect time for academics. For example, during academic blocks avoid both meal breaks and early dismissals.
Reach out to admitted students and encourage them to show up for the program. Making home visits or playing videos at in-school information sessions are two ways to do this.
