Implementation Tips

  • Introduce brief rituals, like discussing personal challenges in a community circle, to help build relationship skills.
  • Integrate SEL-promoting strategies into regular OST activities—for example, by allowing youth to collaborate with their peers.
  • For standalone SEL lessons, develop a written curriculum with lesson plans and guidelines for the frequency of those activities.
  • Embed SEL micro-trainings for staff in scheduled meetings.
  • Plan for staff turnover by creating onboarding materials and repeatable training.
  • Encourage families to use SEL strategies at home with activities like creating family trees to encourage relationship-building.
  • Focus data collection efforts on data that are relevant to the program’s specific SEL goals.
