Implementation Tips
Principal preparation program leaders planning a redesign might consider the following:
- Select district partners with an eye toward long-term commitment.
- Structure communication and work routines to build and maintain strong working relationships. Do this especially in the early phases of the redesign.
- Evaluate the program’s strengths and gaps using a research-based tool. Do this in collaboration with districts and other partners.
- Develop a common vision and plan early in the process. Work through differences in perspectives.
- Commit to what is needed to achieve the common vision. This could include fundamental changes in the curriculum, instruction, staffing, and clinical experiences.
- Prepare for known challenges. These might include turnover among those key to the work and conflicting priorities among the partners.
- Prepare to develop, test, and refine components of the program.
- Build systems to collect data to monitor progress and plan improvements.
