A compilation of resources and tools to jumpstart the summer learning planning process

High-quality summer learning programs play an important role in the lives of our nation’s young people. Summer learning programs can bolster academic knowledge and skills and connect young people to engaging and enriching learning experiences. 

If you’re having trouble figuring out where to begin, we’ve compiled a list of resources and tools to help you get started in planning your summer program.

  1. Summer Learning Planning Toolkit: With more than 50, evidence-based tools and resources, the Summer Learning Toolkit makes it easy for districts and schools to design and implement engaging, effective summer programs—without starting from scratch.
  2. Getting to Work on Summer Learning: Recommended Practices for Success, 2nd ed.: This report provides recommendations based on evaluations of programs at five urban school districts conducted between 2011 and 2016. Each of the selected districts offered a five- or six-week full-day summer program for elementary school-age students. They all focused on reading and mathematics, as well as enrichment activities, such as arts, sports and science exploration.
  3. Key Summer Learning Practices for Elementary School Districts: This infographic (and its accompanying one-pager) provides a summary of eight implementation practices for planning summer learning for elementary schoolers. Some tips include starting the planning process early, using effective student recruitment practices, and striving for cost efficiencies.
  4. A Hot Time for Summer Learning: This podcast series features leading field experts, researchers, and practitioners who are involved in summer learning and enrichment on the national, state, and local levels. Learn how they are planning for these important programs, what it takes to make them effective and engaging for young people, and what is being studied and learned along the way.​​
