Overview
This letter from Wallace comes in response to the written request from U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, the ranking member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. The committee is investigating ways to improve literacy for young people.
Wallace shares several recent studies finding that well-designed summer and afterschool programs can have positive effects on children's literacy and broader skills.
At the same time, the letter acknowledges a need for more research and program evaluations to help understand how different approaches work for different groups in different contexts.
